Easo: 23 Board Meeting

In the capital of Malta another meeting of the Management Board of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) was organized. One of the most iportant issues of the meeting was to discuss and adopt a plan of cooperation between EASO and the European Agency for the Border Guard and Coast (Frontex). The two-day conference was attended by Rafal Rogala, Head of the Office for Foreigners.

During the first day of the meeting the Board discussed, among others, vision and further development of the EASO and the current migration situation in the European Union. According to the current data in the EU + in 2016 more than 1.2 million applications for international protection were issued. The numbers are slightly lower than in 2015 but still, compared to previous years, remain high. During the meetings, the EASO work program for the year 2017 and summary th of the performed tasks in the past year were presented.

On the second day of the meeting in Malta a combined meeting of the boards of the EASO and Frontex took place. The management of both agencies and representatives of the Member States discussed the strengthening of cooperation in the so-called hot-spots in Italy and Greece, greater exchange of information and analysis, and strengthening the role of the EASO and Frontex in the field of migration management in Europe. In order to achieve these objectives a plan of cooperation between the agencies was signed.

European Asylum Support Office (EASO) is an agency of the European Union established to foster cooperation in matters of asylum and support Member States in fulfilling their European and international obligations in this respect.

The European Agency for the Border Guard and Coast (Frontex) helps EU countries and associated countries within the Schengen zone in managing their external borders. It also contributes to the harmonization of border controls in the EU. The Agency facilitates cooperation border services, providing technical support and expertise.
